Furman Center and IESP Recieve MacArthur Grant to Study Impact of Foreclosures on School Performance
February 7, 2011: NYU’s Furman Center and the Institute for Education and Social Policy have been named one of nine MacArthur Foundation grant recipients, as part of the Foundation’s $25 million initiative on How Housing Matters to Families and Communities. The initiative is based on the premise that stable, affordable housing is an essential platform that promotes positive outcomes in education, employment, and physical health by helping to ensure a greater return from other social and public investments. After a competitive selection process, NYU’s Furman Center and Institute for Education and Social Policy, along with researchers from the University of Connecticut, the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University, and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University, were awarded an $800,000 award for research into the impact of housing instability due to foreclosure on school performance. Study on Rezonings and Park Accessibility Published in Cities and the Environment

Furman Center Releases New Report on Mortgage Lending in New York City
November 12, 2010: While home purchase mortgage lending declined throughout the recession, new research released by the Furman Center finds that lending to low and moderate income homebuyers actually increased in 2009, as did the number of new mortgages backed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and Veteran’s Administration (VA). The new data brief,Mortgage Lending During the Great Recession: HMDA 2009, finds that 16 percent of the 2009 New York City home purchase mortgages were FHA/VA-backed loans. By comparison, those loans accounted for less than one percent of home mortgage loans issued from 2005 to 2007. View press release.

Vicki Been joined a panel of experts and community leaders to discuss the “Demographics of a Changing New York” at the Municipal Art Society Summit for New York City on October 21, 2010. After a presentation on changing demographics in New York City, Vicki addressed how population trends affect the City’s challenges in terms of land use policy and economic development. Ingrid Gould Ellen joined a panel of researchers, government officials and stakeholders to discuss the “Next Generation” of rental housing federal policies at a White House conference Oct. 13, 2010. The conference addressed how housing policy could more effectively combat poverty, address social inequity issues, and create new incentives for wealth building in urban and rural America. Furman Center Releases New Report on Public School Students in Homes Facing Foreclosure
October 4, 2010: While researchers have noted the deleterious effects of foreclosure on surrounding properties and neighborhoods, little is known about the effects of foreclosure on children. A new report, Kids and Foreclosure: New York City , released today by researchers at New York University’s Institute for Education and Social Policy (IESP) and Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy, begins to address the issue by estimating the number of students in New York City affected by the current foreclosure crisis. Furman Center Scholar Wins Planning Law Writing Competition
Michael Nadler, a Furman Center Housing and Urban Policy Scholar and New York University Law student, was awarded first prize in the American Planning Association’s annual Smith-Babcock-Williams Student Writing Competition. Nadler will receive a $2,500 prize and his paper, “The Constitutionality of Community Benefits Agreements: Addressing the Exactions Problem,” will be published in the Spring 2010 issue of the Urban Lawyer.
