In Memoriam: Alan Epstein

News & Events | September 9th 2013

The Moelis Institute for Affordable Housing Policy was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Alan Epstein, who served on our Advisory Board since the creation of the Moelis Institute in 2010. Alan received his law degree from NYU’s School of Law, which was very proud to count him the school's alums. He was an active and thoughtful Advisory Board member, and we relied often upon his wise counsel to guide our research and policy agenda.

He was also a leader in the affordable housing community, who was a mentor and trusted colleague of all of our Advisory Board Members. Ron Moelis remembers Alan as "a superb lawyer but also a thought leader in the affordable housing community, and a mentor to so many of us. Despite the difficult and often frustrating housing issues he tackled, he always did so with a calm demeanor and even-handedness that is a model for us all."

Advisory Board member Martin Dunn also remembers Alan’s far reaching influence -- “Alan’s influence on the affordable and supportive housing worlds was extraordinary. If you ever wondered how much difference one person could make in a field, you need only to look at Alan’s life. From his exemplary legal career to his tireless volunteer work with so many organizations, Alan deeply impacted not only the issues he worked on but the people he worked with.“

“Far more than a lawyer, he was a trusted confidant, advisor and friend. Saying Alan will be missed and his absence mourned is an understatement. We will never forget him. His guidance, counsel and wisdom will continue to influence how we think and what we do, and for that reason, too, he will always be with us.”
