June 16th 2021

On June 15, the NYU Furman Center launched the Housing Solutions Lab. The Lab, led by an interdisciplinary team from the NYU Furman Center with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, works with small and midsize cities to plan, implement, and evaluate promising local housing policies that advance equity and opportunity.

The launch event, titled Housing and Opportunity in Small and Midsize Cities, featured a panel moderated by the Lab’s Executive Director, Dr. Martha Galvez. The panelists included:

The Honorable Libby Schaaf, Mayor of the City of Oakland
Rosanne Haggerty, President and CEO, Community Solutions
Tara Raghauveer, Director, KC Tenants
Akilah Watkins, President and CEO, Center for Community Progress

The conversation focused on the housing policy opportunities and challenges facing small and midsize cities. Panelists also discussed the need for a stronger evidence base about effective policy interventions, the importance of centering community voices in planning and advancement of racial equity, and the best ways to build bridges between housing and other critical issues facing cities.
