Sandy’s Impact on Seniors

Data Updates | October 29th 2013

Because of the concentration of older housing stock and subsidized housing for seniors in coastal areas of New York City, some of the neighborhoods hit hard by Sandy have  large numbers of residentsover 65 years old. As the graphic shows, 27 percent of the households in the surge area include seniors, three percentage points higher than the share of households with seniors in New York City as a whole.

Further, seniors living alone—a population that is especially vulnerable during an emergency—make up 12.1 percent of all households in the surge area.
