The NYC Mayor's Office of Housing Recovery Operations (HRO) launched Build It Back to help repair, rebuild, and elevate waterfront homes in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Funded by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant disaster recovery funds (CDBG-DR), Build It Back aids homeowners after all other forms of disaster assistance have been exhausted. The program, which is divided into single-family, multifamily, and temporary disaster assistance, assists applicants through either a reimbursement check, construction services, or acquisition of their home. As of May 2019, the City is nearing completion of its Hurricane Sandy housing recovery efforts, the vast majority of homeowners having received their full benefit and over 5100 projects completed across impacted areas in Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island.
