Ingrid Gould Ellen Presents on the Impact of Neighborhood Violence and Crime

News & Events | October 24th 2013

Furman Center co-director Ingrid Gould Ellen presented this week at NYU Stern's Urbanization Project on the impact of neighborhood violence and crime on children's academic performance. The study, which focused on 3rd-8th grade NYC public school students, found that acute exposure to localized violent crime decreases standardized test scores in English and language arts for elementary school students. Ellen’s work has also examined whether the presence of foreclosures can destabilize a neighborhood and lead to higher levels of crime levels. View the presentation here
