Breakfast 2: Driving a Hard Bargain: Parking Requirements for Residential Development
Wednesday April 27, 2011
8:30 – 10:00 am
On Wednesday April 27, The Institute for Affordable Housing Policy convened over eighty leaders from government, academia, community-based groups, and the private sector to debate the importance of private off-street parking for new residential housing developments.
Following our April 8 breakfast, where we examined the City’s on-street parking policies and considered the feasibility and desirability of various parking reforms, we continued focused our April 27 conversation on private off-street parking. Our panelists discussed the benefits and drawbacks of New York City’s minimum parking requirement for residential development, and how the requirements interact with the city’s sustainability and affordability goals.
Panelists included:
-Alan Bell, Principal and Co-Founder, Hudson Companies
-Leroy Comrie, Member, New York City Council (Land Use Committee Chair)
-Joanne Seminara, Chair, Brooklyn Community Board 10
-Howard Slatkin, Director of Sustainability, NYC Department of City Planning
-Vicki Been (Moderator), Boxer Family Professor of Law and Faculty Director of NYU’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy
-Simon McDonnell (Presenter), Research Fellow, NYU Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy
