Gateway Estates is a 227-acre neighborhood near Spring Creek in East New York, Brooklyn. As a large scale development of city-owned vacant land, Gateway Estates pulled from several financing sources to develop affordable single-family homes. For the first phase of construction, which consisted of 117 single-family homes, in addition to street lighting, paving, infrastructure, etc., the City provided direct housing subsidies of $46,000 for each of the single-family homes constructed, and $30 million in infrastructure costs. After the completion of the second phase of the project, which taps into the nearby Fresh Creek Urban Renewal Area, a total of 2,385 affordable housing units, including senior housing, is to be completed. Affordable housing in the area is to be developed as single-, two-, and three-family homes, in addition to four- and six-story apartment buildings built by Nehemiah Housing Development Fund Company and The Briarwood Organization.
